Sixteen Cumbrians have secured jobs through a recruitment service launched by Sellafield Ltd.
West Cumbria Works is a service aimed at helping unemployed and ‘underemployed’ people in Copeland and Allerdale acquire the skills, behaviours and experience required to find work.
The 16 individuals who have come through the service have successfully gained jobs with various employers, from Sellafield Ltd’s supply chain partners to local small and medium sized enterprises.
Nigel Cleary, a 44-year-old from Whitehaven, was one of the first people to find employment through the scheme.
Having been out of work for 15 months, West Cumbria Works supported Nigel with advice and guidance to help him secure a job at 2 Sisters in Carlisle.
He said: “I’m back to what I’m used to doing again, which feels brilliant.
“In a way I was the test tube for the scheme, but they have been true to their word and stuck with me until I found a job.
“I feel like I’ve got my life back again.”
The number of people gaining employment through the service, which is delivered by Mace and Capita on behalf of Sellafield Ltd and supported by Jobcentre Plus, is expected to grow as the service expands.
Helen Fisher said: “It’s fantastic to see 16 west Cumbrians gain employment through West Cumbria Works.
“It’s pleasing to see so many local businesses supporting the service and giving local people a chance to change their lives.
“I hope to see the service to continue to grow and provide high quality employment opportunities for west Cumbrian people and a talent pool of individuals to help local companies thrive.”
West Cumbria Works acts as a jobs brokerage service, matching local job seekers to suitable current vacancies.
Should there be barriers which prevent those people from successfully applying for their matched job, help can be given to overcome them, with support ranging from developing self-confidence and people skills, CV advice, updating skills and experiences with work placements and providing access to training.
